Gateway to The Medical Consumer's Advocate

The Medical Consumer's Advocate is the pet project of Douglas Hoffman M.D., Ph.D. The goal of this site is to provide people with the information they require to take responsibility for their medical care.

This is the beta site for the Medical Consumer's Advocate... my workshop. To view a somewhat more polished (but scaled-down) version, you are welcome to read my Patient Health column in the International Online Journal of Otorhinolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery.

This is an experimental site. Please browse these pages and send me your feedback.I appreciate your criticism and encouragement greatly!

We are all medical consumers. We owe it to ourselves (and to our loved ones) to be knowledgeable consumers. The goal of this site is to give our readers the information they need to be knowledgeable medical consumers.

We begin by making a safe assumption: the men and women who care for you, the health insurance companies that pay your bills, and the HMOs that regulate the care you receive, are not perfect. To avoid becoming the victim of their imperfections, you must accept responsibility for your health care; you must become an active participant in the decision-making process (there is always a decision to be made).

The resources available here can guide you toward becoming a street-smart medical consumer. This site aims to help you through all of the tricks and turns of the health care system, from selecting a doctor to paying the bills.(Newcomers to The Medical Consumer's Advocate should begin by reading About this Site and Medicine 101.)
